What you need to know about starting breastfeeding
When it comes to breastfeeding these are the two most important things to remember
Breastfeeding is not supposed to hurt. Yes, you heard it right. If you get discouragement from other moms or if you had a painful experience with a previous baby I can understand some eyebrow lifting. However painful breastfeeding is a matter of misinformation. When your baby is well positioned and she latches properly, breastfeeding will not hurt.
If you face any problems, get help and get it NOW! While breastfeeding challenges are not life threatening, they are time sensitive. Once faced with an issue, you have minutes or perhaps a few hours to stop the problem on its track and avoid further complications. La Leche League has volunteers all across the world that will answer questions for free over the phone, typically from 8:00AM to 8:00PM local time. If you can not get a hold of them or if what they suggest doesn’t help you, contact a lactation consultant ASAP (In other words, NOW). Most lactation consultants will answer questions for free over the phone, but even if you have to pay, it is money well spent. Home visits vary in price; the average is around $100.
