Olive Oil, the perfect diaper rash solution

May 30th, 2008 by pluaces | 9

My son was born with very fair skin, courtesy of his dad genes.

He was continuously getting diaper rashes. We tried the regular common cures including powders and creams, both natural and commercial.

They I remembered, my midwife had recommended olive oil. It was even part list of items we had to get.

We started using olive oil and he never got irritated again. He has the healthiest skin, especially on his bottom!

Once again, nature proves best.

Note: Olive oil doesn’t negate the need to change baby’s diapers often; it is a very effective solution when irritation occurs even with frequent changing.

The two main obstacles to good nutrition

May 21st, 2008 by pluaces | 3

When trying to eat healthier the two main fronts are Eliminate refined sugars, and Minimize toxins. Let’s see why is this such a challenge.

When trying to eliminate sugars from your diet you have two fierce enemies; your friends and yourself.

Yes, unfortunately friends might not be very supportive of your efforts, they might not understand the role of refined sugars on the body (other than fattening) and might want to feel that is not possible nor necessary to eliminate refined sugars from the diet. The pressure to be in “the same boat” is not easy to ignore

Refined sugars do much more than making us fat, they also cause insulin surges and drops that are dangerous and may lead to diabetes and many other deceases. Getting deceases due to peer pressure is very silly, don’t you think?

So if you want to eliminate refined sugars from your diet, just smile and when your friends offer you the decadent chocolate cake or the sublime pastries, just say - no thank you, really. When declining the sweets, I often get the famous “come on, live a little!. To which I respond: I don’t want to live a little, I want to live a lot! And I want to feel good while I’m at it.

Next on this series, how to overcome the internal challenges in your quest to eliminate refined sugars from your diet.

Soy Facts

Too much soy might elevate your estrogen levels

Suffering form lactose intolerance during my pregnancy, I considered Soy my protein provider friend. However as most people do when they introduce soy, I was overdoing it, consuming it everyday and on different forms; soy milk, soy yogurt, tofu in salads and soups, etc. When my midwife warned me that too mush soy would elevate my estrogen more than we wanted it to, I remembered: EVERYTHING in moderation. Yes, even too much soy is not a good thing. Now I combine soy, almond and delicious hemp milk into my diet. Nutritional variety is one of the key elements of health.

What you need to know about starting breastfeeding

May 16th, 2008 by pluaces | 1

When it comes to breastfeeding these are the two most important things to remember

Breastfeeding is not supposed to hurt. Yes, you heard it right. If you get discouragement from other moms or if you had a painful experience with a previous baby I can understand some eyebrow lifting. However painful breastfeeding is a matter of misinformation. When your baby is well positioned and she latches properly, breastfeeding will not hurt.

If you face any problems, get help and get it NOW! While breastfeeding challenges are not life threatening, they are time sensitive. Once faced with an issue, you have minutes or perhaps a few hours to stop the problem on its track and avoid further complications. La Leche League has volunteers all across the world that will answer questions for free over the phone, typically from 8:00AM to 8:00PM local time. If you can not get a hold of them or if what they suggest doesn’t help you, contact a lactation consultant ASAP (In other words, NOW). Most lactation consultants will answer questions for free over the phone, but even if you have to pay, it is money well spent. Home visits vary in price; the average is around $100.

About

May 14th, 2008 by pluaces | 0

Hi,

My name is Paula Luaces and I’ve started this page to share my experience with improving health and happiness. I started that journey about three years ago in a very casual way. My first resolution was “to eat one fruit a week”. What I found is that it is all about good information and the desire to change for the better.

After a few months of small transformations people started noticing and telling me “wow, you look great”. I never asked how did I looked before… but I understood things were changing. When I started sharing my “secrets” with friends, co-workers and during the casual conversation at the grocery store, I found people really appreciate the information and were willing to try some of my tips out.

My objective is to educate and inspire so everybody can tap into the riches of healthy living.

The rewards are immense, from tangible benefits such as weight loss, more energy all the way to things you can not easily see such as increased happiness and disease prevention.

I’d love to hear from you, if you have specific questions about healthy habits you haven’t found let me answer it for you
